As its name suggests, Highway Hypnosis is a major safety concern for vehicle riders and drivers on highways. It’s a trance-like state that the mind goes into when riding over long distances on relatively smooth, traffic-free roads.
You may imagine it as “sleeping with your eyes wide open, while your body sub-consciously continues to hold on to the handlebar and keep the throttle twisted”. All of this happens involuntarily, making it extremely dangerous.
During highway hypnosis, brain activity slows down drastically, and this increases reaction time exponentially. Late reactions can result in accidents or even death. Just imagine being woken up from deep sleep from the rider’s seat with a vehicle barrelling towards you at high speed. Such situations usually result in panic reactions by the rider, leading to severe accidents.
How to prevent highway hypnosis?
Take frequent breaks.
Avoid driving at times when you would otherwise be sleeping.
Keep your mind alert, and when you feel the drive is getting monotonous, pull over and take a break.
