Transporting your motorcycle by train is generally the safest, most reliable and affordable way of getting your ride from one place to another without actually riding it. Here is all you need to know about transporting your bike by train.
There are two ways to go about this.
Book the motorcycle as luggage—in this case you travel along with the bike which, effectively becomes your luggage. This is pricier than the next option.
Book the motorcycle through the Indian Railways’ Parcel Service.
The advantage of method 1 is that you can monitor both loading and unloading. The disadvantage of this method is that it’s subject to space being available for your motorcycle in the luggage van. Also, you need a confirmed ticket on your chosen route to book your motorcycle as luggage.
Method 2 is useful if because you don’t need to travel along—you, or someone else with authorized letter can collect it on your behalf.
In both the cases you need to produce documents of your motorcycle: a valid RC and insurance and an identity document such as your Aadhar card. The motorcycle needs to be booked through the parcel office at the railway station you intend to transport it from.
Once the booking is done, empty the fuel tank or you will be fined. Pack it well—use a professional packer to avoid transit damage. To minimize this, you may also choose to remove fragile parts such as turn indicators, mirrors and lighting accessories before packing the motorcycle for the train.
We will be back with exciting events after COVID-19.
