Paint Protection Film, commonly called PPF, is a protective layer of film that adheres to the metallic and plastic surfaces of the motorcycle. It needs to be applied by a detailing professional. The purpose served by paint protection film is just what its name suggests - protecting the painted surface of the motorcycle from corrosion, minor blemishes and scrapes. Essentially, it will let the factory paint coat of the motorcycle stay blemish-less for long periods of time. Is it essential? Not really, unless your motorcycle is very expensive. The reason we're saying this is two fold. One. High quality paint protection film is expensive, and requires a good amount of skill and patience to apply. The whole process can take the better part of a day, which makes it time consuming. Two. Paint protection film is just a basic protection for the motorcycle's factory paint, and can easily get damaged in the event of a crash. Reapplying PPF can be as expensive as getting a specific part of the motorcycle painted, and in some cases may be as expensive as the motorcycle's factory paint itself. A better solution would be to apply regular wax polish to your motorcycle's painted surface after thorough cleaning. Also, wax polish costs a fraction of what PPF costs, and can also be applied by absolutely anyone.
