Mandatory for all vehicles in India, an HSRP (High security registration plate) is an aluminium number plate that is linked to your vehicle (chassis number) and is electronically registered. In terms of its anatomy, the HSRP number plate comes with a chrome finish Ashok Chakra on a blue hologram which has been mandated by the Government.
This unique type of number plate came into existence as regular number plates were easy to tamper with. Further, swapping with another number plate was easy. HSRP number plates have reduced these illegal activities to a great extent.
Key Features of HSRP Number Plates
This new aluminium based plate comes with the following features: -
• A 10-digit PIN number is engraved via laser on the left corner of the plate, denoting its serial number.
• The plate comes with hot stamped numbers and alphabets for enhanced sturdiness, as a number plate of the vehicle is among the most prone elements to accidental damage.
• All the characters on the number plate are branded with a thin film containing the word “INDIA” written on it. Also, denoting the international registration with the code “IND” in the beginning is branded with the Ashok Chakra hologram.
Top Benefits of HSRP Number Plates
Here are some of the benefits of HSRP number plates have to offer: -
• Restricts fake registration – The unique hologram and Ashok Chakra embedded in it is hard to counterfeit. This has a significant impact in terms of curbing various illegal activities in the country.
• Minimizing vehicle theft – Since these plates are tamper-proof, unique and extremely hard to replicate, they inhibit car thefts and illegal activities. Additionally, tracking down stolen vehicles has become easier for law enforcement.
• Improves road safety – By implementing the strict usage of HSRP number plates, the Government aims to enhance road safety. The highly advanced safety features of these plates help in identifying vehicles involved in road accidents, rule violations and any other unlawful activities.
Earlier, these number plates used to come with a different font and style which was easy to customise by the vehicle’s owner. That, in turn, made it difficult for traffic police personnel to read the registration number plate if they wanted to track the vehicle. Now, HSRP registration plates have a standardized font, making them easy to read and track.
How to Apply for HSRP?
The HSRP registration/booking can be done online in a majority of the states. However, in some states, you need to visit the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The fee may depend on the type of vehicle and class. So, check with the local RTO or on the Road Transport website.
As per the guidelines of the Ministry of Road Transport, all the vehicles must have HSRP number plates. Vehicles that are purchased after 2019 already come installed with HSRP number plates.
