IATF16949 Transition process

Tamil Nadu, November 28, 2018:

TVS Motor Company had been ISO/TS 16949 certified by Bureau Veritas since 2006. However, ISO/TS16949, applicable only for automotive organisations, was completely revised and reissued as IATF 16949 in 2016. This new standard is based on wide consultations among various members of automotive business community at different levels such as OEM’s, automotive industry associations, regulatory bodies, system integrators and certification registrars in the context of rapid changes and developments in automotive business environment. IATF 16949 is developed by IATF ( International Automotive Task Force) in collaboration with ISO and is comprised of many of automotive OEM members such as Daimler, FORD, BMW,FIAT, GM, CHRYSTELER, Volkswagen, PSA-Peugeot, Renault & many industry associations such AIAG-USA, SMMT-UK, FIEV-France, ANFIA-ITALY etc.

We were required to migrate our system and practices to IATF 16949 by early 2018 in order that we complete the certification process well before September 2018, deadline given by IATF. This primarily required changes to the relevant processes to meet the requirements of IATF 16949 and their implementation. This would have met the requirements of certification process to the new standard.

Risk based thinking constitutes most significant theme of the new standard. We realized that this migration to IATF 16949 offered excellent opportunities to apply the risk-based thinking and review the value of established practices across all our business processes using our rich experience and knowledge. This is also significant in the context of current business environment and the need to boost the capability of our processes to contribute to better business performance.

The migration project for IATF 16949 was undertaken by TVSM during FY 2017-2018 and has been a unique initiative in the sense it had manifold objectives but with the common purpose of enhancing our organizational capability and associated practices. The QSP’s and process Maps of different functions provide the basic framework towards implementation of our processes. These are dynamic and need to be regularly updated to delivering value towards fulfilment of our functional objectives (also known as MPCPs). The IATF 16949 migration project was conducted under the guidance of Management Representative and Team through participation of respective functions’ QMS coordinators and IATF trained members in various functions.

The certification audits by Bureau Veritas Audit Team were completed in May 2018 for all TVSM -2Wheller Plants located at Hosur-Tamil Nadu, Mysore-Karnataka, Nalagarh-HP as well as for 3W plant at Hosur. Bureau Veritas Team acknowledged TVSM transition process as unique and one of the best in terms of implementing IATF16949 in true spirit and adding value to Business.

Certification to IATF16949 for all the stated plants of TVSM were awarded by Bureau Veritas in August2018.

Thus TVS Motor Company has become the 1st 2Wheeler Company in India certified to IATF16949.
