How to adjust the pre-load setting of your motorcycle’s rear suspension

Most motorcycles sold in India, including ones by TVS Motors, offer adjustability for the rear suspension. Motorcycles usually have two kinds of rear suspension set-ups: twin shock absorber layout or a mono shock layout. It's very easy to adjust the pre-load of your TVS Motorcycle's rear suspension.
1. Put your motorcycle on the center stand or paddock stand (if your motorcycle doesn't have a center stand)
2. Get hold of a monkey spanner.
3. In case of motorcycles with dual shock absorbers, start with one of the shock absorbers. Grip the monkey spanner firmly on the notch adjuster (present at the top of the suspension). To make the suspension stiffer, turn the adjuster clockwise. To make the suspension more comfortable, turn the adjuster anti-clockwise. Adjust suspension by two notches at a time, and ensure that both shock absorbers are adjusted to the same level.
4. In case of a mono shock rear suspension, the process is the same. It's just that you need to follow the process for one shock absorber rather than two.
5. Stiffer suspension makes your motorcycle's handling sharper but ride quality will suffer. A softer set-up does the opposite.
6. After adjusting, take the motorcycle out for a ride. If you feel the suspension is too stiff, readjust, making the pre-load less stiff. If you feel that the handling can be better, make the suspension pre-load stiffer.
Note: All suspension adjustments are compromises. You need to find the one that suits you best.
We will be back with exciting events after COVID-19.
