The Evolution of Engine Technology in TVS 2-Wheelers – TVS Motor

TVS Motors launched a new scooty, “TVS Scooty” back in 1993. It was the first attempt at indigenously developing an engine for two-wheelers which became an instant hit. Thereafter, the company set up a new manufacturing plant in Mysore to cater to the growing demand. Subsequently, TVS XL 100 was launched in 1997.

At this time, the company was also restructuring its entire vendor base with the objective of creating a robust vendor network to meet its future expansion plans. In 1998, with its newly developed expertise in 4-stroke engines, TVS launched many new 2-wheelers, like Spectra in 1999 and Fiero in 2000 which was the first Indian motorcycle to feature a 150cc engine. Finally, the iconic TVS Victor 4-stroke was launched in 2001, marking the end of foreign assistance for TVS. This bike became the most fuel efficient bike and clocked a sales figure of 4 lakh units in less than 18 months.

Heralding a New Era of Motorcycles

The mid-2000 saw the launch of the Apache series and Centra (2005) and TVS Sport (2007). While the focus of the company did shift to the Apache series, TVS Sport was still clocking good sales figures. 2015 saw the relaunch of this high average bike in India with the Long Life 100cc DuraLife engine offering improved mileage, new colour options and various first-in-segment features and a 5-year warranty without any additional charge.

BS6 Kick-Off

In the first quarter of 2020, The Company re-launched the bike TVS Sport BS6, with a new and improved 109cc engine. This oil-cooled mill for the first time came with a fuel-injection system and the proprietary ET-Fi technology or EcoThrust Fuel Injection Technology that offers crisper throttle response. Thanks to better fuel combustion, the power unit is able to produce 8.2 PS, higher than its BS4 predecessor (7.4PS) with an increment in torque as well – 8.7 Nm for BS6, while BS4 produces 7.5 Nm. Furthermore, all TVS motorcycles have become 15% more fuel-efficient, including some of the best mileage motorcycles in TVS Star City Plus, TVS Sport and TVS Radeon.

Today, TVS Motor is constantly pushing the envelope when it comes to engine technology in its products, so much so that there’s a ‘TVS Product for everyone’. The new-age rider can opt for the wickedly stylish TVS Raider or the sport NTorq that offers superb pickup and acceleration; those who seek performance can take their pick from the Apache lineup; the ones who want versatility have the TVS Ronin while the comfortable and practical options include scooters like the award-winning TVS Jupiter and TVS Zest 110.
