Motorcycles are basically machines, machines made of hundreds of moving parts that need to move in perfect symphony to allow you to enjoy their full potential. While motorcycle manufacturers in India have well trained service personnel to maintain your bike, there are a few basic things that you could do on your own. These basic bike maintenance steps will not only help you build a relationship with your machine but also allow you to catch minor imperfections that could snowball if left unattended. Let’s get down to the basics.
1. Engine oil level. Most motorcycles have an oil measuring window built into the crankcase. Others have a dipstick that can be used to measure the amount of oil. If the level is low, you can easily top it up by following basic instructions from the owner’s manual.
2. Every time you head off to ride, you need to inspect tyres for the right air pressure, cuts, stones and other minor damages to ensure that your ride is safe. Make this a part of your pre-ride routine.
3. Chain maintenance and adjustment. For chain maintenance, all you need is some chain lube, a chain cleaner and a rag or two. For adjustment, you need a couple of spanners, and the owner’s manual that will guide you in the right direction. Again, this is quite easy to do.
4. Washing and detailing. Washing a motorcycle is pretty straightforward, and so is detailing it after the wash. Just make sure you don’t use pressurized water on sensors and electricals. For detailing, you’ll need motorcycle polish and a couple of rags and sponges for even application.
We will be back with exciting events after COVID-19.
