Monsoons are just around the corner. Riding in the wet can be challenging yet fun at the same time. To have fun riding in the rain, your motorcycle needs to be in top shape. With this aspect in view, here are a few pre-monsoon prep tips for your motorcycle.
1. Tyres, tyres, tyres: Tyres represent the only contact patch between the motorcycle and the road. From grip during cornering to braking distances, tyres are critical. Make sure your tyres have adequate tread remaining. More tread equals more grip. This is particularly important on wet roads.
2. Brakes. Riding in the wet means lower grip levels and more work for the brakes. So, it's important that your motorcycle's brakes are in good shape. Replace disc pads and drum liners if necessary. While replacing disc pads, ensure that the brakes are bled.
3. Bike storage. While motorcycles are designed to be ridden in all kinds of weather including monsoons, covering a motorcycle while not in use will minimize the chance of 1. electrical issues 2. corrosion (particularly for motorcycles in coastal areas) and 3. excess wear and tear of cosmetics. Getting a waterproof bike cover or finding covered parking for your motorcycle is a great idea during the monsoons.
4. Chain maintenance. Wet roads lead to water hitting the chain and washing off the chain lube. So, it's a good idea to invest in a high-quality chain lubricant, which lasts longer in the wet. A well-lubed chain and sprocket lasts significantly longer than non-lubed or inadequately lubed ones.
5. Lights. Rains means lower visibility. Ensure that all lights on your motorcycles are in good working order. If necessary, invest in a good pair of auxiliary lamps with yellow covers for riding in the rain.
We will be back with exciting events after COVID-19.
