The clutch on your motorcycle is the part that transmits the power that your motorcycle’s engine generates to the gearbox. The clutch is a part that goes through a lot of stress, day in and day out. It’s also a frequently replaced mechanical part depending on how the rider handles it. While experienced riders can run the stock clutch of a motorcycle for over 50,000 Kms with careful use, most other riders who are less careful end up replacing the clutch in just say 20,000-30,000 Kms. If the motorcycle is ridden on harsh terrain, the clutch replacement could be even shorter. But how do you tell that your motorcycle’s clutch needs replacing? Here’s how. Slippage Slippage is a clear sign of an ageing clutch. Slippage is simple to understand. It happens when the engine's RPMs keep on increasing, but the motorcycle is not gaining any speed or is gaining speed quite slowly. This means that the clutch has started to slip and is very close to the end of its life. Hard gear shifts When you face more effort to shift gears even when the clutch is fully depressed, it means that there is something that’s not quite right with the clutch. Even mechanical noises while shifting gears are indicative of a clutch not working as it ideally should. Contact your service center if this happens. Shuddering Shuddering is what you experience when you release the clutch too fast. However, if this happens even when you release the clutch slowly, it means that the clutch is on its way out and would soon need replacement.
